Vaccines

Vaccine Types

There are several different types of vaccines. Each type is designed to teach your immune system how to fight off certain kinds of germs—and the serious diseases they cause.

When scientists create vaccines, they consider:

  • How your immune system responds to the germ
  • Who needs to be vaccinated against the germ
  • The best technology or approach to create the vaccine

Based on a number of these factors, scientists decide which type of vaccine they will make. There are several types of vaccines, including:

  • Inactivated vaccines
  • Live-attenuated vaccines
  • Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines
  • Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines
  • Toxoid vaccines
  • Viral vector vaccines
Inactivated vaccines

Inactivated vaccines use the killed version of the germ that causes a disease.

Inactivated vaccines usually don’t provide immunity (protection) that’s as strong as live vaccines. So you may need several doses over time (booster shots) in order to get ongoing immunity against diseases.

Inactivated vaccines are used to protect against:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Flu (shot only)
  • Polio (shot only)
  • Rabies
Live-attenuated vaccines

Live vaccines use a weakened (or attenuated) form of the germ that causes a disease

Live vaccines are used to protect against:

  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR combined vaccine)
  • Rotavirus
  • Smallpox
  • Chickenpox
  • Yellow fever
Messenger RNA vaccines—also called mRNA vaccines

Researchers have been studying and working with mRNA vaccines for decades and this technology was used to make some of the COVID-19 vaccines.

mRNA vaccines are used to protect against:

  • COVID-19
Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines

Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines use specific pieces of the germ—like its protein, sugar, or capsid (a casing around the germ).

One limitation of these vaccines is that you may need booster shots to get ongoing protection against diseases.

These vaccines are used to protect against:

  • Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) disease
  • Hepatitis B
  • HPV (Human papillomavirus)
  • Whooping cough
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Shingles
Toxoid vaccines

Toxoid vaccines use a toxin (harmful product) made by the germ that causes a disease. They create immunity to the parts of the germ that cause a disease instead of the germ itself. That means the immune response is targeted to the toxin instead of the whole germ.

Like some other types of vaccines, you may need booster shots to get ongoing protection against diseases.

Toxoid vaccines are used to protect against:

  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
Viral vector vaccines

For decades, scientists studied viral vector vaccines. Some vaccines recently used for Ebola outbreaks have used viral vector technology, and a number of studies have focused on viral vector vaccines against other infectious diseases such as Zika, flu, and HIV. Scientists used this technology to make COVID-19 vaccines as well.

Viral vector vaccines use a modified version of a different virus as a vector to deliver protection. Several different viruses have been used as vectors, including influenza, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), measles virus, and adenovirus, which causes the common cold. Adenovirus is one of the viral vectors used in some COVID-19 vaccines being studied in clinical trials. Viral vector vaccines are used to protect against:

  • COVID-19

FormInjection

Hepabsv 100IU Injection helps to protect you against hepatitis B (a virus that damages the liver). It is used to prevent hepatitis B after exposure to contaminated blood through sexual contact, accidental needle prick injury, from an infected mother to her newborn or after a liver transplant.

Hepabsv 100IU Injection is normally given along with the hepatitis B vaccine. It comes from human blood plasma and is given by an injection into a large muscle such as your thigh or buttock. Your doctor will inject the prescribed dose after analyzing your condition. It should be given as soon as possible after the risk of infection is identified. If it is delayed too long, it may not be effective. This medicine is not a vaccine and will not provide long-term protection from hepatitis B.

Hapibev A Vaccine protects against Hepatitis A, which is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV).
It spreads from person to person via contact with contaminated food or water.
It is safe and effective and given as 2 shots, 6 months apart. Both shots are needed for long-term protection.

Hapibev A Vaccine is given as an injection by a doctor or nurse. This vaccination is done in children at the age of 12 months through 18 years. Adults who have not been vaccinated previously and want to be protected against hepatitis A can also get the vaccine. The best way to prevent hepatitis A is through vaccination. To get the full benefit of the hepatitis A vaccine, more than one shot is needed. The number and timing of these shots depends on the type of vaccine you are given. Practicing good hand hygiene plays an important role in preventing the spread of hepatitis A.

Verorab Vaccine is given to people who are at higher risk of coming in contact with rabies like veterinarians. It is also given to people after an animal bite if the animal could have rabies. If the vaccine is given immediately and appropriately, it is 100 percent effective.

Verorab Vaccine is given by injection by a doctor or nurse. It is administered post thorough washing (for about 15 minutes, with soap and copious amounts of water) of all bite wounds as early as possible. The sooner treatment is begun after exposure, the better. Post-exposure anti-rabies vaccination should always include administration of both Immunoglobulin and vaccine, with the exception of persons who have previously received complete vaccination regimens. It is very very important to complete the course of the vaccine to prevent this fatal disease.

The most common side effects include pain, joint pain, vaccination site redness as well as swelling. They do not normally last very long. Sitting or lying down can sometimes help. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects persist or worry you.

Before having the injection, you should tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a vaccine. Some other medicines may react with the rabies vaccine, so let your doctor know about all the medicine you are taking as well.

Manufactured ByBharat Serums & Vaccines Ltd
Packaging Size2 ml in 1 prefilled syringe
BrandBerirab P 300 Iu Injection
CompositionHuman Rabies Immunoglobulin (300IU)

Berirab P Injection is used with rabies vaccine to prevent Rabies. It works by giving your body the antibodies it needs to protect against the rabies virus. It is administered only once, at the beginning of anti-rabies prophylaxis, to previously unvaccinated persons.

Berirab P Injection is given as an injection by a doctor or nurse. It must always be used in combination with a rabies vaccine. Post-exposure prophylaxis consists of a regimen of one dose of immunoglobulin and full courses of rabies vaccination. This should be given as soon as possible after exposure. Both active (vaccine) and passive immunization (Immunoglobulin) prevent the rabies virus from infiltrating the central nervous system, but become ineffective once the virus has crossed into the central nervous system. Berirab P Injection is administered only once in a lifetime.

The most common side effects include pain, anaphylactic reaction, angioedema (swelling of deeper layers of skin), injection site stiffness, soreness, and tenderness. They do not normally last very long. Sitting or lying down can sometimes help. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects persist or worry you.

Before having the injection, you should tell your doctor if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to an immunoglobulin. Some other medicines may react with the human rabies immunoglobulin so talk to your doctor about other medications you are taking as well. You should consult your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
